What to Know About AI in the Admissions Office

As AI reshapes everything from homework to hiring, it’s no surprise that families are starting to ask: Is AI being used in college admissions, too?

The short answer is yes, but not in the way many people may be thinking. Understanding how admissions offices actually use AI can help students apply more strategically (but no less authentically).

The Here and Now: Yes, Colleges Use AI, but Human Judgment Still Rules

In today’s college admissions process, AI is primarily used as a support tool. Admissions officers are still reading applications, essays, and recommendation letters themselves. So while AI helps manage volume and efficiency, it has not replaced judgment.

Most colleges receive tens of thousands of applications each year (a number that has dramatically increased in recent years), and AI tools are being used to assist with:

  • Sorting and organizing large applicant pools
  • Flagging missing materials or inconsistencies
  • Managing communications and outreach
  • Identifying patterns or trends in applicant data

What AI does not do is decide who gets in based on an algorithm alone. Final admissions decisions are still made by people who are trained to evaluate students holistically.

What This Means for Your Student’s Application

The rise of AI makes clarity and authenticity more important than ever.

Applications that are clearly organized, consistent across sections, and well-articulated are easier for both systems and humans to evaluate. Sloppy submissions, contradictions, or generic responses can raise red flags.

Can Colleges Detect AI-Written Essays?

The other elephant in the room related to AI and admissions is the application itself, namely the student essay. Can admissions offices tell if a student used AI to write their essay?

The reality is nuanced. While colleges are aware of AI tools and may use detection software to flag AI-generated content, no tool is perfect. That said, what admissions officers are very good at spotting is writing that doesn’t sound authentic or doesn’t match the student’s voice elsewhere in the application.

Essays that feel overly polished, generic, emotionally flat, or inconsistent with recommendations or activities can prompt closer scrutiny.

What this means is that AI isn’t automatically off-limits, but how it’s used matters. At the end of the day, the applications need to show off the student – and too often, AI is not going to help with that.

Admissions offices value authenticity. An imperfect essay in a student’s real voice is far more compelling than a flawless one that doesn’t sound human.
